Methods: The descriptive study was held with a sample chosen with non-probability accidental sampling method comprising the husbands of puerperal women hospitalised (419 fathers) at a hospital between 30th July-30th December, 2016. Relevant data were collected through the use of a “Personal Information Form” and “Parents' Sense of Security in First Postnatal Week Scale (Form for Fathers)". Data analysis was undertaken through number, percentage distribution, one-way analysis of relevance, independent two-sample t-test and Kruskal Wallis H test. Results: 57.3% of fathers in the study were under 30 years of age, 48.9% of them were high school graduates, 86.9% of them lived in the nuclear family, 60.4% lived in the city and 71.6% had middle income level. In the postnatal period, 87.8% of fathers were given relevant information at hospital, 80.9% were provided with support at hospital, and 82.6% felt good physically and 28.3% felt good psychologically. During the first postnatal week, 54.2% of fathers stated that they had experienced problems (breastfeeding, etc.), the highest level of support during this period came from mothers and mothers-in-laws. Sense of security was established to be better among fathers with an educational level of high school or university, living in urban areas, with wives that have experienced vaginal delivery in the last pregnancy, provided with information and support at the hospital, feeling good physically and psychologically, and observing no problems during first postnatal week (p<.05). Conclusion: Fathers with higher levels of education who are provided with support and relevant information have a better sense of security in the postnatal period. In line with this result, healthcare professionals (doctor, nurse, midwive, etc.) are suggested to provide support to fathers during the postnatal period on the basis of their roles as trainers and advisors. © 2019, Dokuz Eylul University.
