BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS), which is frequently seen in young adults, affects mental health
because of disease symptoms and cognitive disorders. This study was conducted to evaluate the presence of alexithymia and problem- or emotion-focused coping strategies with stress in MS patients, determine the relationship between these variables, and compare the results of MS patients with those of healthy individuals.
METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and comparative study was carried out with the participation of 120 MS patients presenting to a neurology clinic and outpatient clinic of a university hospital and 120 healthy individuals. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and the Ways of Coping Scale. RESULTS: The 40.8% rate of alexithymia in the MS patients was higher than that in the healthy individuals (21.7%). Compared with healthy individuals, MS patients use emotion-focused coping methods, such as a lack of self-confidence approach and a submissive approach, more frequently ( P < .05). A significant negative correlation was found between the alexithymia and problem-focused coping strategies of MS patients ( P < .01). CONCLUSION: Alexithymia is more common in MS patients than in healthy individuals. Alexithymia negatively affects the methods patients use to cope with stress. In the treatment and care of MS patients, nurses should plan interventions for the ability of these patients to recognize and express their emotions and develop positive coping methods
2023-01-01T00:00:00ZQUALITY OF LIFE AND COPING WITH STRESS IN RELATIVES OF PATIENTS IN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS DURING COVID-19Gülsoy Z.Karabey T.https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12418/149372024-03-07T21:47:32Z2023-01-01T00:00:00ZQUALITY OF LIFE AND COPING WITH STRESS IN RELATIVES OF PATIENTS IN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS DURING COVID-19
Gülsoy Z.; Karabey T.
Background Factors such as the thought of losing the patient, the uncertainty of the course of the disease,
and the inability to obtain sufficient information about the patient are frightening and alarming for relatives of patients in the intensive care unit.
Objectives To determine the quality of life and the style of coping with stress of the relatives of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods This study was descriptive and cross-sectional. A personal information form, the Styles of Coping With Stress Scale, and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey were used to collect data.
Results The sample size of the study was 162 relatives of patients in the intensive care unit. There was a highly significant (P = .001) positive correlation between the Styles of Coping With Stress mean scores of the participants and their quality of life (as shown by the 36-ItemShort Form Health Survey).
Conclusions In addition to the uncertainty and fear associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is very distressing to have a relative who is a patient in the intensive care unit. In this context, it is especially important to improve the level of coping with stress of the relatives of patients in the intensive care unit and to increase their quality of life. Purpose. Violence is a factor that is frequently encountered in health systems and causes problems of various sizes. Nursing students who take an active role in health environments and are also inexperienced are also exposed to this workplace violence. Mental health nurses and nursing students practicing in this 4eld aim to improve the quality of patient care while managing violence and aggression. It is thought that the inability of nursing students practicing in the 4eld of mental health to successfully manage violence and demonstrate resilience may a6ect their clinical performance and reduce the quality of patient care.) is study was conducted to determine the psychological resilience levels, caring behaviors, and violence management competencies of nursing students and to reveal the relationship between the variables. Design and Methods. )e type of study is descriptive and cross-sectional. )e sample of the study consisted of 452 nursing students who agreed to participate in the study. )e data of the study were collected using the personal information form, Adult Resilience Scale, Caring Behaviors Scale-24, and Violence Management Competency Scale for nursing students in practice areas. )is study was reported following the STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) recommendations. Findings. A statistically signi4cant
positive correlation was found among the psychological resilience levels, caring behaviors, and violence management proficiency of the students participating in the study (p < 0.001). Practice Implications. It is very important to determine the psychological resilience, care behaviors, and violence management competency levels of nursing students, who are the professionals of the future, to present nursing care from a holistic framework and to increase the quality of the care provided. In this context, it is
recommended to determine the psychological resilience, care behaviors, and violence management competency levels of nursing students in their education and training processes.
