Background and Design: The glutathione s-transferases (GST) are a family of multifunctional proteins that function both as important enzymes of deltoxification and intracellular binding proteins. The aim of the present study was to search whether there is a relation between GST and ultraviolet sensitization. Materials and Methods: Fourty-nine healthy volunteers have taken into acount. They were divided three groups according to their ultraviolet sensitization (low, medium and high, respectively). Venous blood samples were obtained from 49 healthy subjects. Specific glutathione s-transferases activity is expressed as units per miligram of hemoglobine spectrophotometrically. Results: The means of GST activities were 7.51 ± 1.01 nmol/gr Hb in the first group, 7.06 ±0.82 nmol/gr Hb in the second group and 8.26±1.28 nmol/gr Hb in the third group. Conclusion: Although the mean of GST levels in the third group was found to be an increase insignificantly compared to other groups, we believe that there may be a relation between GST and ultraviolet sensitization, but that further studies included also hereditary GST deficiencies should be made.
