Experimental investigation into death resulting from liquefied petroleum gases (LPG)
In our country, LPG is a commonly used matter in daily life. LPG is composed of a mixture of some hydrocarbons, but major components are propane, butane and isobutane gases. The determination of the cause of death in asphyxiation gas cases is very difficult because of the variations in the concentrations of the gases among the tissues according to the type of asphyxia, type of gas, and the duration of exposure. The objective of the present experimental study is to clarify the cause of death and to identify the factors involved in asphyxia by the inhalation of LPG. For this reason, the symptoms during asphyxia and the post-mortem investigations into deaths resulting from LPG inhalation were studied using rats and LPG. In this study, we used three groups of rats: the rapid asphyxia group, the prolonged asphyxia group and LPG group. Livers, lungs, brains and hearts of all rats were examined macroscopically and microscopically. Histo-pathological examination of the livers of the LPG group showed mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration in the portal region, which is originally demonstrated in the present study. The results were evaluated by chi-square (x2) test. This paper emphases valuable findings for estimating the type of asphyxia in cases of asphyxia and the post-mortem investigation and the histo-pathological findings in deaths from LPG inhalation.
