Misoprostol versus dinoprostone for labor induction in term pregnancies [Term gebeliklerde dogum induksiyonunda dinoproston yerine misoprostol kullanimi]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This prospective randomized study was designed to compare efficacy and safety dinoprostone (PGE2) and misoprostol (PGE1) for ripening the cervix and inducing labor at term. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-eight patients were randomly assigned to one of two induction groups: In Group 1, intracervical 500 mcg dinoprostone was administered and in Group 2, intravaginal 100 mcg misoprostol is used. RESULTS: There were not significant differences in terms of initial data between the groups except age that is significantly greater in the Group 1. In Group 1, labor induction was successful in 28 patients. In Group 2, labor induction was successful in 31 patients. The interval from induction to active phase of the labor was not different between the groups. The interval from induction to delivery was significantly shorter in the Group 2. There were no significant maternal and fetal side effects. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that intravaginal misoprostol is as effective as dinoprostone for ripening of the cervix and inducing labour at term.
