Antimicrobial susceptibility in bacteria of corynebacterium species the pathogen role of which regains importance in various infections [Çeşitli enfeksiyonlarda patojen rolü yeniden önem kazanan korinebakteri türlerinde antimikrobiyal duyarlılık]
Abstract
Objective: When bacteria of Coryneform species are isolated from clinical samples, it may be difficult to decide of its clinical importance. In 2014, EUCAST (The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) has reported clinical breakpoints for the disk diffusion method for Corynebacterium isolates. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibilities of Coryneform species isolated from various clinical samples by using these breakpoints. Material and Methods: In this study, the susceptibilities of 107 Coryneform bacteria isolated from various samples that were sent to the Microbiology Laboratory from Cumhuriyet University, Medicine Faculty Hospital were evaluated. Bacteria which have been isolated were identified by Microflex LT MALDI-TOF MS (Bruker Daltonics, Bremen, Germany) device. Susceptibility testing was performed by using disk diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Fastidious Agar (5% horse blood and 20 mg/l ß-NAD) according to EUCAST suggestions. Results: As a result of this study, 49.5% of 107 isolates isolated from various clinical samples were identified as Corynebacterium striatum. Additionally, Corynebacterium amyloticum, Corynebacterium propinquum, Corynebacterium afermentans, Corynebacterium jeikeum, Corynebacterium minitissimum and Corynebacterium urealyticum isolates were identified at the rates of 17.8%, 10.3%, 8.4%, 6.5%, 4.7% and 2.8%, respectively. All Coryneform species were found susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid. Furthermore, resistance rates in Coryneform species to other antibiotics were determined to be between 90% and 100%. No meaningful difference was observed in resistance rates according to Coryneform species. Conclusion: In recent years, Coryneform bacteria other than diphtheria have been observed in the patients exposed to immunosuppressive and long-term invasive catheters as a cause in the infections such as bloodstream infections, endocarditis, and pneumonitis. The high resistance rates to other antibiotics except for vancomycin and linezolid require a careful evaluation of the role of these bacteria in various infections. © 2016 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
