Does Illness Perception Predict Hopelessness and Death Anxiety in Palliative Care Patients?
(Sage Publications Inc, 2024) Cam, Funda; Boy, Yasemin; Mollaoglu, Mukadder; Korkmaz, Samet
Illness perception is crucial in how patients navigate health challenges. Investigating if it predicts hopelessness and death anxiety is vital, especially in palliative care where these burdens are common. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 129 patients receiving treatment in the palliative care clinics of a university hospital. Patient Identification Form, Illness Perception Questionnaire, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Death Anxiety Scale were used as data collection tools. The findings revealed that patients generally have a negative perception of their illness, with moderate levels of hopelessness and high levels of death anxiety. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between illness perception, death anxiety, and hopelessness. Furthermore, illness perception was found to predict 80.1% of the variation in hopelessness levels and 64.7% of the variation in death anxiety levels among patients. These findings underscore the importance of addressing psychological factors as part of comprehensive palliative care management.

Environmental Stressors Perceived by Patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit
(Galenos Publ House, 2022) Mollaoglu, Murat Can; Karabulut, Olgay; Boy, Yasemin; Mollaoglu, Mukadder; Karadayi, Kursat
Objective: This study aimed to determine the environmental stressors perceived by patients admitted to the surgical intensive care unit. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The sample of the study comprised 83 patients hospitalized in the surgical intensive care unit. Data were obtained from the Patient Information Form and the Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressor scale. Results: Patients hospitalized in the surgical intensive care unit identified the most critical stressors as experiencing pain, inability to sleep, lack of privacy, getting bored, and short family and friends visit time, whereas the minor stressful factors were identified as hearing phone sounds, nurses who are more concerned with bedside devices than the patients, and constantly looking at the ceiling. Conclusion: Environmental stressors affecting patients in the intensive care unit should be identified and eliminated. This initiative will prevent new stress-related health problems and improve patient quality care.

Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Palliative Nursing Care Quality Scale
(Cambridge Univ Press, 2024) Mollaoglu, Mukadder; Boy, Yasemin
ObjectivesMeasuring tools are essential in assessing the quality of care. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Palliative Nursing Care Quality Scale (PNCQS-T) and the sociodemographic characteristics affecting the quality of care. MethodsThis methodological study, whose linguistic equivalence was confirmed by the translation/back translation method, was carried out with the participation of 209 nurses. Personal Information Form and PNCQS-T were used as data collection tools. Construct validity was determined by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Reliability was tested with internal consistency and item-total correlation coefficients. ResultsAdaptation results showed that the Turkish version of the scale is adequate for linguistic and content validation. The Turkish adaptation's original scale of 20 items was reduced to 18. As in the original scale, all items were combined under a single dimension in the Turkish adaptation. Modified CFA indicated a well-fitting model. PNCQS-T explained 42.1% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha value was 0.92. The lowest score obtained from the scale is 18; the highest score is 90. Higher scores indicated that the palliative care provided by nurses was of good quality. Significance of resultsThe Turkish version of the PNCQS-T is reliable for assessing the quality of palliative care provided by nurses in Turkey.

Turkish Validity and Reliability of the Quality Nursing Care Scale (QNCS-T)
(Ibn Sina Trust, 2024) Mollaoglu, Mukadder; Basit, Gulden; Su, Serpil; Boy, Yasemin
Objective Nursing care is a unique and indispensable concept for nursing that includes helping to meet the needs of an individual or a group of individuals offered by nurses. This study is aimed to test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Quality Nursing Care Scale (QNCS-T). Materials and Methods The methodological approach employed in this study spanned from April 25, 2021, to May 5, 2021, and enlisted the participation of 347 nurses. Data collection was executed utilizing a Personal Information Form and the Quality Nursing Care Scale (QNCS). The research comprised two phases: Phase 1 involved the adaptation of the scale, while Phase 2 focused on determining construct validity through confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was assessed through measures of internal consistency and item-total correlation coefficients. Results and Discussion The adaptation phase yielded affirmative outcomes, affirming the linguistic and content validation of the Turkish version of the scale. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a highly favorable fit for a six-factor model. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire scale was determined to be 0.93, attesting to its strong internal consistency. Conclusion The Turkish version of the Quality Nursing Scale showed consistently good psychometric properties of reliability and validity.
