Öğe Are the sinonasal outcome test and nasal obstruction symptom evaluation scale questionnaires suitable for assessing the quality of life after septorhinoplasty? A prospective case-control study(2023) Bora, Adem; Durmus, Kasim; Cam, Selim; Altuntas, Emine ElifIn the evaluation after septorhinoplasty (SRP), the surgeon's plan and the patient's expectations may not always be realised. Therefore, in our prospective case- control study, we aimed to investigate whether the Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation Scales (NOSE), which have been validated in different patient populations in Turkish, are appropriate for evaluating SRP cases and their relationship with each other. Preoperative and postoperative data of NOSE and SNOT-22 questionnaires of 125 cases diagnosed with traumatic septum deviation and external nasal deformity and decided to be operated were analyzed. It was calculated that the SNOT-22 score of those with high/low preoperative NOSE scores was also high/low with a 53.6% probability and that the SNOT-22 score of those with high/low postoperative NOSE scores was also high/low with a 69.9% probability, indicating a positive and high-level relationship between postoperative NOSE and SNOT-22 measurements. When the answers given to all questions in SNOT-22 were evaluated separately, it was observed that the most disturbing symptoms of the cases were nasal obstruction at 78.4% and the need to blow the nose at 46.4% in the preoperative period, and nasal obstruction with 64.8% and the need to blow nose with 37.6% in the postoperative period. The most dramatic changes in the answers to SNOT-22 questions were observed in the patient's feelings of frustrated/restless/irritable, sadness, and embrassed. SNOT-22 and NOSE questionnaires can be used interchangeably to evaluate the functional status of patients undergoing SRP surgery.Öğe Does knowledge and concern regarding food supplement safety affect the behavioral intention of consumers? An experimental study on the theory of reasoned action(Frontiers Media Sa, 2024) Bayir, Talha; Cam, Selim; Tuna, Murat FatihIn recent years, health crises have led consumers to make more frequent purchases of food supplements. The global food supplement market, which reached $61.20 billion in 2020, is estimated to reach $163.12 billion by 2022 and $350.96 billion by 2032. However, many consumers still have concerns about the safety of food supplements. Within the scope of the research, firstly, the health consciousness (HC) level of food supplement consumers was determined. Secondly, food safety knowledge (FSK) and food safety concerns (FSCs) were measured. Thirdly, consumers' attitudes (ATUs), subjective norms (SNs), and behavioral intentions (BIs) toward food supplements were determined within the scope of the theory of reasoned action. The study used a convenient sampling, and 327 participants were included in the sample population. The data for the analysis was collected using the online survey method in the third quarter of 2023. The relationships between hypothesized items in the structural model were tested using the Smart-PLS. The validity and reliability of the measurement model were evaluated at the start of the structural equation modelling approach using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Regression analyses were performed in the structural model phase to evaluate overall fit and suggested relationships by way of the Smart-PLS. In light of the findings, it was determined that the interaction between HC and ATU was mediated by FSK, and the interaction between HC and the SN was mediated by FSK. Consequently, this research presents a variety of theoretical and practical implications to give clues for consumers' health regarding food supplement consumption.Öğe Evidence supporting the role of telomerase, MMP-9, and SIRT1 in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)(Springer Wien, 2020) Uzun Cicek, Ayla; Mercan Isik, Cansu; Bakir, Sevtap; Ulger, Dilara; Sari, Seda Aybuke; Bakir, Deniz; Cam, SelimGrowing evidence suggests that telomeres, telomerase, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), andSIRT1(sirtuin1) are involved in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, whether these molecules are contributors to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been little explored and poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the potential role of telomerase, MMP-9, andSIRT1in children with ADHD. The study was performed on 46 children with ADHD aged between 8 and 14 and 43 healthy children matching in age and gender. Children were evaluated by Kiddie-Sads-Present and Lifetime Version, Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short Form (CPRS-RS) and Stroop test. Serum telomerase, MMP-9, andSIRT1levels were measured by a quantitative sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. MMP-9 and telomerase levels were significantly higher andSIRT1levels were significantly lower in patients with ADHD than those of controls. All three molecules were significantly associated with both the severity of ADHD symptoms and cognitive functions. This is the first attempt to indicate that the important role of telomerase, MMP-9, andSIRT1in ADHD, and the association of all these molecules with the severity of ADHD and cognitive functions, but future studies are required to verify these results.Öğe Retrospective evaluation of the relationship between seasonal factors and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(DEOMED PUBL, ISTANBUL, 2018) Durmus, Kasim; Bora, Adem; Cam, Selim; Altuntas, Emine ElifObjective: We aimed to investigate whether climatic conditions of the region where we live and meteorological parameters had any effect on pathogenesis and prognosis of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) or not. Methods: Sixty-eight ISSHL patients, who were treated in our department, were evaluated retrospectively. Meteorological data, including monthly ambient, maximum and minimum temperatures, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure and rainfall, were obtained from the observation station of the Central Weather Bureau of Sivas. The meteorological data for 10 days before the onset of the disorder and in a period of 21 days after the beginning of the treatment were used to investigate the relationship between climatic data and ISSNHL. Siegel's criteria were used to evaluate the treatment success. Results: The relationship between ISSNHL and seasons was observed to be statistically significant when the seasonal distributions of the cases were evaluated statistically (p<0.05; p=0.008). The change between Siegel's criteria and season was also statistically significant (p<0.001). As recovery in hearing of cases with ISSNHL in accordance with Seigel's criteria and meteorological parameters were evaluated, a statistically significant difference was determined in terms of weather temperature; minimum pressure, and rainfall in the period of 10 days before the treatment. However, when patients were evaluated based on meteorological variables in the period of 21 days after the treatment, there was a statistical correlation with the hearing recovery of the patients according to Siegel's criteria only in terms of rainfall (p<0.005). Conclusion: Our study is the first one indicating that there might be a relationship between rainfall and both pathogenesis and prognosis of ISSNHL. Even though the results of the related studies in the literature varied, we concluded that the relationship between ISSNHL and temperature, pressure, rainfall, and season should not be ignored.Öğe The effect of a silicone sheet on sciatic nerve healing in rats(Springer, 2023) Derebasinlioglu, Handan; Demirkazik, Ayse; Dogan, Inanc Cicek; Egilmez, H. Reyhan; Cam, Selim; Yeldir, NeseBackgroundFibrosis occurs during the healing process after nerve injury. Extraneural fibrosis occurs around the epineural sheath. Intraneural fibrosis occurs in the internal structure of the nerve. Prophylactic treatment with silicone gel sheets is effective in preventing severe scarring in the skin. Nerve action potential (NAP) recording is a well established, simple, and useful tool in the surgical treatment of nerve damage. Our aim in this study was to determine the effect of a silicone sheet on biophysical and histopathologic parameters when used in the treatment of peripheral nerve transection (neurotmesis) and crush injuries.MethodsThe study was conducted with 32 Wistar albino male rats. The rats in the neurotmesis and crush injury groups were divided into study and control groups. Before the injury and after 12 weeks, electrophysiological measurements were obtained. The sciatic nerve biopsy specimens were histopathologically evaluated.ResultsAfter 12 weeks, there was no statistical difference between pre- and post-injury Delta PP values in the PNR+SS group (p = 0.123). There was no statistically significant difference in post-injury Delta PP values between the CI and CI+SS groups (p = 0.201). The mean total histopathological score was significantly higher in the PNR+SS group than in the PNR group (p = 0.023).ConclusionsIn this rat model, a silicone sheet appears to have positive effects on peripheral nerve healing after primer repair and crush injury.Öğe The Effect of Coffee Chain Customers' Need to Smell on Their Taste Evaluations(Int Journal Contemporary Economics & Administrative Sciences, 2024) Tuna, Murat Fatih; Cam, SelimThis paper aims to investigate whether ambient scent in coffee chains affects the taste perceptions of customers who consume the products of those chains. The paper highlights the importance of smell in creating memorable experiences and its role in arousing customers. It also mentions the olfactory system's vital functions in warning and protection, eating behavior, and social communication. The use of ambient scent enhances the memorability of brand-related olfactory information. The paper mentions that taste evaluation involves both objective and subjective processes. Biological preferences and existing information can influence taste perceptions. Positive sensory experiences lead to positive attitudes and increased consumption, while negative experiences can have the opposite effect. The paper also emphasizes the connection between smell and taste, with smell responsible for a significant portion of our taste. The coffeehouse's ambiance and coffee scent can influence taste and consumer choices. The sample covers data collected from 578 participants via the convenience sampling method. Overall, the paper provides insights into the impact of smell and taste evaluation mediated by customer loyalty in the context of coffeehouse chains. The study is also thought to inspire future research on senses other than smell and taste in sensory marketing, thereby providing practical implications for businesses in the field.Öğe The relationship between pityriasis rosea, seasonal factors, and other herpetic infections: A time series analysis(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2019) Hayta, Sibel Berksoy; Guner, Rukiye; Cam, Selim; Akyol, MelihBackground: Data on seasonal variation and viral etiology in Pityriasis rosea (PR) have been conflicting. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of PR and other herpetic infections, taking seasonal changes into account. Methods: The data were collected retrospectively from electronic health registry systems in Sivas in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey between 2008 and 2016. According to their clinical types, other herpetic infections were investigated. Environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and rainfall for the relevant period were added into the model. Time series methods (augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test and regression analysis) were used in the analysis. Results: A total of 1207 PR patients were included in the study. The number of PR patients was calculated to be 0.462 times that of the same period in the previous year. The incidence of PR increased significantly when the rate of infections caused by varicella-zoster virus decreased and the rate of infections caused by herpesvirus Type 1 and humidity increased (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Environmental factors such as humidity are important in the emergence of the PR. Furthermore, the incidence of PR may be inversely affected by varicella-zoster infections contrary to the relationship between PR and herpesvirus Type 1 infections.
