ANALYSIS OF CANCERS IN A UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES BETWEEN 2006 AND 2022
(Dokuz Eylul Univ Inst Health Sciences, 2023) Celikgun, Serkan; Koc, Tulay; Ucku, Serife Reyhan
Purpose: Healthcare workers are exposed to a variety of hazardous chemicals and agents that may have long-term effects on their health. One of the health problems caused by these chemicals and agents is cancer. The aim of this descriptive study is to evaluate the cancers seen in those working in a university hospital between 01.01.2006 and 30.06.2022.Material and Methods: All healthcare professionals diagnosed with cancer between 01.01.2006-30.06.2022 were included in this descriptive study. The age, sex, occupation, working unit, and cancer type of the patients were evaluated. Data were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS-22 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Data were presented using descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations for continuous variables; numbers and percentages for categorical variables). Results: Between 01.01.2006 and 30.06.2022, 186 people working at Sivas Cumhuriyet University were diagnosed with cancer. Forty-seven point eight percent (n = 89) of them are male; the mean age of those diagnosed with cancer is 46.0 +/- 8.9 (min 22, max 62). The most common cancers are thyroid (21.5%), breast (16.7%), head and neck (9.7%), hematopoietic system (9.1%), and urinary system (8.1%) cancers. When evaluated according to occupational groups, 22.6% of them are office workers, 19.9% are academicians, 15.6% are workers, 14.0% are nurses, 10.2% are health technicians, and 8.2% are research assistants. Conclusion: In this institution, which has 2721 personnel, approximately 12 employees are diagnosed with cancer each year. Detailed records of patients diagnosed with cancer, especially healthcare professionals, should be kept. More studies are needed in detail on behaviors related to occupational exposures and cancer risk.

Cancer incidence rates by age and gender in Sivas province of Turkey, 2004–2014
(Oman Medical Specialty Board, 2019) Celikgun, Serkan; Nur, Naim
Objectives: We sought to evaluate the trends in age-standardized incidence rates of cancer by gender, age, and types in the Sivas province of Turkey from 2004 to 2014. Methods: Data were obtained from the Sivas Public Health Department Cancer Unit and the Cumhuriyet University Hospital Cancer Record Unit for the studied period. Data were presented as incidence rates by age, gender, and cancer site using world agestandardized incidence rate (ASR-W) per 105 populations. Results: Of the 13 377 registered new cases of cancer during the study period, 43.1% (5771) were female, and 56.9% (7606) were male. The ASR-W of all cancers was 205.2 per 105 in males and 168.0 per 105 in females. The ASR-W was increased for both genders over the 11-year period. The greatest incidence cancer type in males was prostate cancer (ASR-W = 35.8) followed by lung (ASR-W = 33.9), colorectal (ASR-W= 19.0), urinary (ASR-W = 18.4), and stomach (ASR-W = 17.3) cancer. Among females, thyroid (ASR-W= 37.5) was the cancer type with the greatest incidence followed by breast (ASR-W = 27.7), colorectal (ASR-W = 11.7), lymphoma (ASR-W = 10.4), and stomach (ASR-W = 10.0) cancer. Conclusions: The cancer incidence rate in males has remained higher than in females from 2004 to 2014, and an increased incidence of various cancers was observed in both genders. Raising public awareness about the risk factors for cancer and the development of appropriate and effective screening programs to provide more reliable data for cancer prevention and control programs in Sivas province is necessary. © 2019, Oman Medical Specialty Board. The Effect of Age and Gender on Some Hematological Parameters and Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility in Kangal Shepherd Dogs
(Ataturk Universitesi, 2021) Kockaya, Mustafa; Ekici, Mehmet; Genc, Engin; Celikgun, Serkan; Basekici, Hacer
This study was aimed to determine the effect of age and gender on physiological variations in some hematological parameters and erythrocyte osmotic fragility in Kangal Shepherd dogs. A total of 32 clinically healthy Kangal Shepherd dogs were taken into the study and divided into 4 groups in equal numbers (Adult male = 8, Adult female = 8, Senior male = 8, Senior female = 8). Blood samples from the cephalic vein were taken into vacuum tubes containing EDTA by the technique and values of erythrocyte osmotic fragility and complete blood count were determined. The main effect of age and gender with age x gender interaction has no significant effect on hematological parameters (P>0.05). The main effect of age and age x gender interaction of erythrocyte osmotic fragility was statistically significant and higher in the senior females at 0.7% and 0.9% (in addition gender) NaCl concentrations compared to the other groups (P<0.05). However, there was no statistical difference between the adult female and adult male and senior male group at 0.7% and 0.9% NaCl concentrations (P>0.05). The findings may be useful for veterinary clinical practice in establishing Kangal shepherd breed-specific reference ranges for some important hematological parameters. © 2021 Ataturk Universitesi. The effect of platelet-rich plasma on intra-abdominal adhesions in rabbit uterine horn model
(Permanyer Publications, 2023) Kurt, Begum; Yildiz, Caglar; Koc, Tulay; Kurt-Ozkaya, Nese; Celikgun, Serkan
Objective: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on intra-abdominal adhesion at the cesarean section incision line in the uterus. Material and methods: As experimental animals 16 white New Zealand rabbits, 5-months-old, unmated, were used. Animals were divided into two groups the control group and PRP application group. In each group, a transverse incision was made to the uterus to mimic the cesarean section and sutured. Relaparotomy was performed 21 days after the first operation. Results: When the groups were evaluated in terms of inflammation, there was a significant difference between the two groups. When the groups were evaluated in terms of Mason’s Trichrome staining and fibrosis, There was a significant difference between groups. When the groups were evaluated in terms of vascular endothelial growth factor-1, there was also a significant difference between the groups. In an experimental rabbit uterine horn adhesion model, PRP is effective in preventing post-operative adhesion formation. Conclusions: This result may guide clinical studies using autologous PRP to prevent post-operative adhesion formation after gynecological operations. © 2023 Academia Mexicana de Cirugía.
