Evaluation of serum selenium levels in children with recurrent febril convulsions
(2011) Berk, Erhan; Kaya, Ali; Deveci, Köksal; Güven, Ahmet Sami; Demir, Mevlüt; Güneş, Hatice; Gültekin, Asim
Introduction: The febrile convulsion (FC) occurs in neurologically normal children aged between six months and five years and it is defined as convulsions occurred during fever and in the absence of central nervous system (CNS) infection, electrolyte imbalance, diseases affecting directly CNS, and history of afebrile convulsion. The aims of this study were to determine the serum levels of selenium in patients with recurrent FC and to compare them with those of healthy children. Materials and Methods: The study included 61 pediatric patients diagnosed with recurrent FC. At the same session, 54 healthy children who admitted to our pediatric clinic for routine controls without history of fever and convulsion, are assigned as control group. The serum level of selenium was measured by atomic absorption spectrometric method (hydride technique). Results: Mean level of selenium was determined as 67.10±8.87 ?g/L in patients and 81.99±13.13 ?g/L in control group; the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). Discussion: The lower serum levels of selenium in patients with recurrent FC may be the cause of triggering of convulsion or may contribute to its recurrence. Further studies are necessary to clarify this relationship. © The Journal of Current Pediatrics, published by Galenos Publishing.

Evaluation of the relationship of leptin, adiponectin and carnitine levels with lung function, asthma severity and BMI in children with asthma
(Pamukkale University, 2021) Baylan, Filiz Alkan; Deveci, Köksal; Aygüneş, Utku; Haskoloğlu, Zehra Şule
Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between serum levels of leptin, adiponectin and carnitine with lung function, disease severity and BMI (Body Mass Index) in children with asthma. Materials and methods: 97 Pediatric patients with not in acute attack period bronchial asthma and 40 healthy control subjects were included in the study. Pulmonary function tests were done to all asthma patients with a spirometer. Children with asthma were divided into 3 groups according to GINA criteria, mild intermittent, mild persistent, and moderate persistent, with using symptoms and spirometric parameters according to the severity of airway obstruction. Leptin, total carnitine and adiponectin analyzes were performed from venous blood by ELISA method. Results: Patient group serum leptin values were found to be significantly higher than the control group serum leptin values (p=0.001). Patient group serum total carnitine values were found to be significantly lower than the control group (p=0.001). Moderate persistent group adiponectin and total carnitine values were found to be significantly lower than mild intermittent group (p<0.05). A weak negative correlation was found between leptin and total carnitine, eosinophil, BMI values. A weak negative correlation was found between total carnitine and eosinophil, BMI values. A moderate negative correlation was found between age and leptin, adiponectin, total carnitine values. Conclusions: It suggested that leptin levels increased, adiponectin and total carnitine levels decreased in children with asthma and at the same time the decrease in adiponectin and total carnitine levels may be associated with disease severity. © 2021, Pamukkale University. The relationship between serum levels of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies and disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
(Turkish Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2012) Deveci, Köksal; Deveci, Hülya; Bayram, Korhan Barïş; Koçyi?it, Hikmet; Gürgan, Alev
Objective: Although there is an opinion that anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP) is a reliable diagnostic and prognostic indicator in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), its association with disease activity and severity is uncertain. This study has been planned to determine the relationship between anti-CCP antibody levels and the disease activity in patients with RA. Materials and Methods: A total of 48 patients, who have been diagnosed with RA, were included in the study. After physical examination, all patients were evaluated with clinical and laboratory parameters. The clinical symptoms were assessed using visual analog scale (VAS), disease activity score (DAS-28) and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Rheumatoid factor (RF), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), thrombocyte, leukocyte, hemoglobin and anti-CCP levels were investigated. Results: The anti-CCP results were positive in 33 patients (68.7%) and negative in 15 patients (31.3%). Anti-CCP was positive in 30.4% of RF negative patients. A significant difference was observed in average RF levels when the anti-CCP positive and negative patients were compared, however, there was no significance between other parameters. In logistic regression analysis of multiple parameters, higher DAS-28 scores and RF positivity were associated with 5.95 and 5.4 times greater risk of being anti-CCP positive, respectively. Conclusion: Anti-CCP can be used in the diagnosis of patients with seronegative RA and also may be useful for reflecting disease activity. © Turkish Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Published by Galenos Publishing.
