Öğe An Investigation into Geography Teacher Trainees' Environmental Literacy Levels with Respect to Various Variables(Marmara Univ, 2013) Koc, Hakan; Karatekin, KadirThe purpose of the present study is to explore environmental literacy levels of geography teacher trainees and to investigate the impact of various variables on environmental literacy and its components (knowledge - affect - behaviour - cognitive skills). The study was carried out using survey method on 352 freshman, sophomore, junior and senior geography teacher trainees studying at the geography education departments of 5 different universities in Turkey during 2012-2013 academic year. Environmental literacy survey was used to explore their environmental literacy levels. This scale was composed of personal information form, scale for affective tendencies towards the environment, environmental behaviour scale, environmental knowledge scale and cognitive skills test. The data were analyzed using SPSS. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics, independent sample t test, one-way ANOVA and simple correlation were used. According to the findings of the study, the teacher trainees had moderate levels of environmental knowledge and behaviours; they had high levels of affective tendencies, yet their cognitive skills were low. When the mean scores obtained from these four components that make up environmental literacy are examined, it is seen that the teacher trainees had moderate levels of environmental literacy. In addition, an examination of the correlation between the components that form environmental literacy revealed that was a weak positive correlation between knowledge and affect; there was a moderate positive correlation between affect and behaviour, and there was a weak positive correlation between knowledge and skills. However, there was not a meaningful correlation between not only knowledge and behaviour but also between skills and behaviours. This study examined the impact of a number of variables (gender, grade, having taken environmental education courses, being a member of non-governmental organizations, how often the participants visit natural areas, how often they take part in environmental activities, the level of curiosity about the environment and the existence of family members with high levels of environmental sensitivity) on geography teacher trainees' environmental literacy. As a result of this examination, it was found that gender, grade and having taken environmental education courses had no impact on the level of environmental literacy in geography teacher trainees. However, it was also found that the variable of gender had an impact on only affective tendency dimension of environmental literacy, and the variable of having taken environmental courses had an impact on knowledge and cognitive skills dimensions. On the other hand, being a member of non-governmental organizations, the frequency of taking part in environmental activities, the level of curiosity and the existence of family members with high levels of environmental sensitivity played a significant role on geography teacher trainees' environmental literacy levels.Öğe An Investigation into the Impacts of Gestalt Theory on Learners' Map Literacy Skills(Marmara Univ, 2014) Koc, Hakan; Bulut, IhsanGestalt is a German word that means form or shape. The theory of Gestalt deals with the laws of perceptional organization. The laws of figure and background relations, proximity, similarity, completion, continuity are laws of perceptional organization. According to Gestalt theoreticians, laws of perceptional organization help explain how people learn (Bower ve Hilgard, 1981; Senemoglu, 2010: 242). The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the Gestalt Theory (perceptional organization) affects the level of map literacy skills. Perceptional organizations in maps is a three-phase process. The first phase deals with figure and background relations. The second phase of perceptional organization in map literacy is composed of the grouping process, which refers to the laws of perceptional organization in Gestalt theory (proximity, similarity, completion, continuity and simplicity). The last phase of perceptional organization in maps is composed of the processes of differentiation and evaluation. An experimental method with a treatment and control group is used in the study. As the main data collection tool in this study, an attainment test developed by the researcher to test the map literacy skills of higher education students (Freshmen at the Department of Social Sciences Education) was used. KR20 reliability coefficient of the test was found to be 0.70. The study sample is composed of the freshman students at the Department of Social Sciences Education at the Faculty of Education, Cumhuriyet University. These learners are composed two sections. One of the groups were randomly assigned as the treatment group, while the other one was assigned as the control group. A pre-test was given to both groups to test whether the learners performed equally before the instructional period. A t test was conducted to compare the mean pre-test scores of the groups, [t(77)=.820; p >.05]. This suggests that the groups' mean scores before the instruction were similar. After the three-week instructional period, it was found that Gestalt approach was more effective in boosting learners' map literacy skills in comparison with teacher centered instructional methods, [F(1-77)=26.519; p < 05].Öğe An Investigation into Map Literacy Levels of Elementary School Teacher Candidates Based On Various Variables(MARMARA UNIV, 2016) Koc, Hakan; Cifci, TanerThe purpose of this study is to identify map literacy levels of elementary school teacher candidates and examine the impact of various variables on the dimensions that form map literacy. This study was carried out using survey model on 243 teacher candidates, who were sophomores studying at elementary teaching department of faculty of education during the academic year 2015-2016. The results of the study indicated that map literacy levels of the teacher candidates were low, while the ability to use maps in processing, reading and interpreting maps, drawing maps and using maps were of the average level. When the impact of various variables on map literacy of elementary school teacher candidates was examined, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between males and females in drawing maps and using them in favour of the former. No significant differences were found between males and females in other dimensions. However, with respect to the frequency of map use, a statistically significant difference was found between more frequent users and less frequent ones in terms of reading maps and interpreting them, drawing maps, and the map literacy scores, calculated using all dimensions, in favour of more frequent users. Similarly, with respect to being interested in geography, there was a statistically significant difference between the teacher candidates who are interested in geography and those who are not, in terms of using maps in processing, reading and interpreting maps, the ability to draw maps and the map literacy score in favour of the former.Öğe PROBLEMS OF SUGAR BEET PRODUCERS IN SIVAS PROVINCE AND PROPOSALS FOR SOLUTIONS(MARMARA UNIV, 2018) Koc, Hakan; Ergun, Abdulkadir; Kartal, FatihSivas Province is one of the ten provinces with the largest volume of sugar beet cultivation in our country. The study titled "Sugar beet producers' problems in Sivas Province and suggestions to identified problems" determined the sub problems encountered by sugar beet producers in regards to selection of varieties, precautions taken against frost, weeds and diseases in sugar beet cultivation areas, irrigation methods, preference of fertilizers, marketing and quota practice and solutions were sought to these problems. The research was carried out with the help of interviews and field observation methods, which are qualitative research methods. A semi-structured questionnaire was used in the interview. It was determined in the interviews that representatives of seed companies were also effective in the selection of variety in addition to yield factor. It was identified that producers took precautions against frost by delaying sowing time against and did not use any other methods. The most common weeds in sugar cultivation areas were found to be goosefoot, mustard, death angel and common wild oat while root rot, leaf spot, powdery mildew and root bearding were the type of most common plant diseases respectively found in beet cultivation areas. Climatic conditions were found to determine the number of irrigations in sugar beet cultivation areas. Unplanned and senseless irrigation was found to result in the drying of some water resources. While the sugar beet producers who were interviewed in the framework of the study indicated that they did not face marketing problems, they were observed to regard the quota practice as a significant issue.Öğe The Concept of Region in Geography Education(Marmara Univ, 2012) Koc, Hakan; Aksoy, BulentThe aim of this study is to define the cognitive levels of undergraduate students, having geography education in the higher education institutions in our country, about the concept of region. In line with this aim, a survey comprising eight unstructured questions about the concept and characteristics of region was applied to 165 undergraduate students having education in the departments of Geography Teaching and Geography of the faculties of Education and Letters at six different universities in Turkey. Descriptive surveillance and content analysis methods were used in this research and to analyse the data obtained from the research, corresponding with the problems and sub-problems, frequency, arithmetic mean, percentage of values have been used; t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques were applied. The cognitive levels of undergraduate students differentiate with respect to the variables of department and university while not differentiating with respect to gender. The cognitive levels, regarding the concept and type of region, of undergraduate students receiving geography education have been found to be high for the questions 1 and 6, while being considerably low for the questions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.Öğe The Effect of Migration on The Gender and Age Group of Population (Sivas Example)(Marmara Univ, 2010) Koc, Hakan; Sagdic, MustafaMigration is of significant effect on the change of the features of geographical locations and population.
