A case report of immediate autotransplanted teeth: 2-year follow-up
(Bayrakol Medical Publisher, 2022) Yildiz, Tugcenur; Koc, Busra; Mavi, Esra; Zan, Recai
Autotransplantation is the removal of tissue or an organ from an area of a living being's body and its transplantation to another area in the same body. Autotransplantation plays a key role in replacing missing teeth of young patients since this procedure has many advantages compared to fixed prosthesis and implant applications in individuals of developmental age. General indications for autotransplantation are periodontal causes and tooth loss that cannot be restored due to caries or trauma. On the other hand, external root resorption and dentoalveolar ankylosis are the most common complications of auto -transplantation. Autotransplantation is a treatment method that can result in a high success rate when attention is paid to the necessary prognostic factors.

Actinomyces Associated with Radicular Cyst: Case Report
(Aydın ECE, 2022) Kolay, Şükrü; Mavi, Esra; Göze, Ömer Fahrettin
Actinomycosis is an infectious disease that rarely settles in the jaw. It is most commonly located in the cervicofacial, thoracic, abdominopelvic, and cerebral regions. Actinomycosis is mainly caused by Actinomyces israelii, a gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium. Surgical excision and antibiotic therapy are also required in the treatment approach. We present a rare case of surgical and medical treatment of Actinomycosis, which is rarely seen in the maxillary intraoral region. Actinomyces may be associated with a radicular cyst. The intraoral lesion of a 70-year-old diabetic female patient who applied to our clinic with long-term bleeding in the maxillary anterior region was surgically removed. The excised tissue was evaluated microscopically. Actinomyces associated with radicular cysts were seen. Short-term antibiotic therapy was then administered. An uneventful recovery was observed in the controls. J Microbiol Infect Dis 2022; 12(3):127-129.

(Kerman Univ Medical Sciences, 2020) Candan, Merve; Mavi, Esra; Buldur, Burak
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the causes and patterns of permanent tooth extraction among a subpopulation of 9-15-year-old Turkish children. METHODS: This study employed a retrospective design and consisted of a total of 198 children aged 9 to 15 years attending a dental faculty between January and December 2019. The clinical and radiographic data were obtained from the medical and dental forms from the faculty database. The inclusion criteria included having at least one permanent tooth loss. Age, gender, the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) scores, type and localization of missing permanent tooth/teeth, and reasons for the loss were evalauted. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test at 0.05 significance level. RESULTS: A total of 198 patients with 309 extracted teeth were evalauted. The mean age of the subjects was 12.95 +/- 1.58 years and mean DMFT score was 6.25 +/- 3.52. Extractions for orthodontic needs (41.7%) and caries-related extractions (32.4%) were the most common causes of tooth loss followed by unsuccessful dental treatments in 13.9% of cases. While the highest DMFT scores were found in dental caries and orthodonic needs groups, the less scores were found in the others group. The most frequently extracted teeth due to caries were the first molar teeth and the first mandibular molars were mostly extracted compared to maxillar first molars. The most frequently extracted teeth due to orthodontic needs and dental caries were seen in girls. CONCLUSION: Orthodontic needs and dental caries were found to be the main causative factors for permanent tooth extractions.

Effects of a single intravaneous dose of zoledronic acid on bone healing following tooth extraction in ovariectomized rabbits
(Elsevier, 2020) Mavi, Esra; Hocaoglu, Peyami Turgay
Objective: The present study is aimed to investigate the effects of administering a single intravenous dose of zoledronic acid (ZA) on bone healing following tooth extraction in ovariectomized rabbits. Materials and methods: Female, New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into three groups including Control, ovariectomy + saline (OVX) and ovariectomy + zoledronic acid group (ZOL). Bilateral ovariectomy was performed to the rabbits in OVX and ZOL groups under general anesthesia. Control group underwent sham surgery. Eight weeks later, mandibular right incisors of all animals were extracted under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, Control and OVX groups were given saline and 0.1 mg/kg ZA was administered to ZOL group intravenously. All animals were sacrificed after 12 weeks. Results: The findings of histopathological and biochemical evaluations reflected insignificant differences among study groups in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), increases in osteoclasts, ossification, vascularization and mononuclear cell infiltration measures (p > 0.05). In contrast, bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP-2), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and organization of the extraction wound differed significantly between groups (p < 0.05) Conclusion: The potential beneficial effects of ZA administration on the wound healing process following tooth extraction were demonstrated via serum TNF-alpha, BMP-2 and VEGF levels in an osteoporotic model in ovariectomized rabbits. Surgical treatment of an extraoral fistula developing due to the left maxillary first molar tooth of which endodontic treatment was performed and infection could not be eliminated
(AVES, 2022) Koç, Büşra; Kengel, Büşra Melda; Mavi, Esra
Extraoral fistulas are confused with many different formations, especially skin lesions, tuberculosis, and os-teomyelitis, and as a result, ineffective treatment can be applied to patients. Differential diagnosis should be made very carefully in these cases to prevent wrong diagnosis and treatment. This study's goal is to summa-rize the dental diagnosis and treatment options of extraoral fistulization developing due to odontogenic in-fection. A 22-year-old male patient with no systemic disease applied to Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Dentistry due to the extraoral fistula in the left maxillary region. According to the dental history of the patient, he had undergone a root canal treatment in tooth number 26 in another institution two years ago. The patient primarily applied to the dermatology clinic. The patient was not treated in the dermatology clinic and was referred to the plastic surgery department. But when it was observed that healing could not be achieved despite three operations, the patient was referred to the dentist. It should definitely be taken into consideration that skin lesions in the face and neck region may be caused by odontogenic infections. The clinical and radiographic examination should be performed carefully in the differential diagnosis, and the appropriate diagnosis should be made. Thus, when a tooth related to the lesion is detected, the use of unnecessary medications and wrong interventions may be avoided by performing the appropriate treatment. © 2022, AVES. The evaluation of the effects of natural zeolite (Clinoptilolite) in diabetic rats on bone healing in dental extracting socket
(Elsevier B.V., 2023) Çelikbaş, İstemihan; Mavi, Esra; Hepokur, Ceylan
Objectives: The fact that clinoptilolite reserves are abundant and economical in the world, its toxic effects are not observed in clinical studies in humans and animals, and it has superior physical properties suggests that clinoptilolite may be an easily accessible product for the healing of tooth extraction wounds. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of cliniotilolite on bone tissue healing and bone formation in the extraction socket in experimentally diabetic rats by micro-CT analysis. Materials and methods: 36 male Wistar Albino rats were divided into 3 main groups as Healthy Control, Diabetes Control and Diabetes + Clinoptilolite. Afterwards, these groups were divided into 2 subgroups to be sacrificed on the 14th and 28th days, and each subgroup had 6 rats (n = 6). At the 14th and 28th days, the rats were sacrificed and the effects of clinoptilolite on bone tissue healing and bone formation in the alveolar socket were evaluated by micro-CT analysis. Results: According to the statistical analysis results, the difference between the groups in terms of bone volume, bone surface to bone volume, trabecular thickness and hounsfield units values, which are the parameters of the 14th day groups, was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Among the parameters of the 28th day groups, only the hounsfield units value was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the study show that clinoptilolite can contribute to the healing of extraction wounds and bone formation. © 2022 Craniofacial Research Foundation

Three-dimensional evaluation of dentigerous cysts in the Turkish subpopulation
(Bmc, 2024) Eninanc, Ilknur; Mavi, Esra
Background To investigate the radiological and demographic features, types, distribution, and treatment methods of dentigerous cysts (DC).Methods Panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of patients diagnosed with DC based on biopsy results between January 2020 and December 2023 were examined. In patients from different age groups, the numbers, types and locations, and radiological features of DCs, associated changes in surrounding tissues, and treatment methods used were reviewed. Results Among 95 patients with DC (66 males, 29 females), sex and age distributions were comparable between those with a single cyst (n = 86) and those with two cysts (n = 9). Of 104 DCs, 44 were central, 38 were lateral, and 22 were circumferential. DC types were not significantly affected by sex, age group, or anatomical location. Circumferential DCs often caused displacement of the mandibular canal inferiorly. While enucleation was preferred for the treatment of central DCs, circumferential DCs were treated with marsupialization. Conclusions In this study, which is the first to evaluate the DC types on CBCT images, the central type was the most common. Circumferential DCs were mostly treated with marsupialization. CBCT imaging can assist in determining DC types, and may provide guidance for treatment planning.
