Carbon dots in antibiosis: Disinfection and sterilization
(De Gruyter, 2023) Bayatani, Golnar; Matin, Mahdie; Alikhanian, Alireza; Mirhoseinian, Mahtab; Montazer, Mohammad Nazari; Tüzün, Burak; Mahdavi, Mohammad
Antibiosis is the antagonism caused by the toxicity of secondary metabolites produced by the microorganisms. Our understanding of microbiology has improved as a result of research on antibiosis and its role in antibiotics. Nowadays Major bacterial diseases are becoming more resistant to standard antibiotic treatments, and multidrug-resistant bacteria are emerging at an alarming rate. High rates of morbidity and mortality are a challenge caused by antibiotic resistance in bacterial infections hence it is essential to synthesize and introduce new antimicrobial agents. Many studies have reported that Carbon Dots (CDs) show useful functions in antibiotic, antitumor, and antiviral activities. In this chapter several CD-based structures and their effects on antibacterial resistant bacteria's have been investigated. © 2023 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

    Carbon dots in photodynamic therapy
(De Gruyter, 2023) Matin, Mahdie; Mirhoseinian, Mahtab; Alikhanian, Alireza; Bayatani, Golnar; Montazer, Mohammad Nazari; Mahdavi, Mohammad; Tüzün, Burak
Carbon dots (CDs) as a subclass of carbon-based nanoparticles were first discovered in 2004 and attracted the attention of scientists worldwide to their extinguish physiochemical properties; nowadays CDs have a broad range of applications including bioimaging, photocatalysis, fluorescent ink, sensors, lasers, and LED. In this chapter we will have a look into the synthesis, structure, and applications of CDs on biomedical science such as bioimaging, biosensors, drug and gene delivery, and photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy is the method to transfer light energy to its surrounding using photosensitizer structure trials, which showed meaningful response to this approach in many types of malignancies, CDs could be a suitable option to use as photosensitizers. © 2023 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
