    Adaptation of Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) for Nurses: A Validity and Reliability Study in Turkish

    Aim: The Everyday Discrimination Scale is frequently used in the field of health and social psychology to examine individuals' experiences of discrimination and unequal treatment. To the best of our knowledge, no Turkish language version exists which has been adapted to study discrimination in nurses. The aim of this study was to adapt the Scale to nurses and to examine its factorial validity and reliability. Methods: The population and sample of the study consisted of nurses working in a university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected online between January and April 2023. Confirmatory factor analysis with maximum likelihood estimation was conducted to analyse the factor structure of the adapted Scale. Results: A total of 244 nurses voluntarily participated in the study. The 8-item, one-factor baseline model of the adapted Everyday Discrimination Scale, most commonly used in literature, showed a poor model fit (RMSEA= 0.145; CFI= 0.839; TLI= 0.775; SRMR 0.058). It improved significantly after addition of two error covariances between items 1 and 2 and items 7 and 8 (RMSEA= 0.051; CFI= 0.982; TLI= 0.973; SRMR= 0.036). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Everyday Discrimination Scale can be used as a valid and reliable tool to assess nurses' experiences of discrimination. Similar to the adaptations of the scale in other countries, measurements with the scale should be analysed using a latent variable model, considering that some error covariances need to be parameterized. © 2024 The Authors.
