A Novel Voltage-Current Characteristic Model for Understanding of Electric Arc Furnace Behavior Using Experimental Data and Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm
(MDPI, 2025) Seker, Mustafa; Unsal, Emre; Aksoz, Ahmet; Dursun, Mahir
The control of nonlinear systems cannot be effectively achieved using linear mathematical methods. This paper introduces a novel mathematical model to characterize the voltage-current (V-I) characteristics of the electric arc furnace (EAF) melting process, incorporating experimental field data for validation. The proposed model integrates polynomial curve fitting, the modified Heidler function, and double S-curves, with the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm applied for parameter optimization, enhancing accuracy in predicting arc dynamics. The performance of the model is compared against the exponential, hyperbolic, exponential-hyperbolic, and nonlinear resistance models, as well as real-time measurement data, to assess its effectiveness. The results show that the proposed model significantly reduces voltage and current harmonic distortion compared to existing models. Specifically, the total harmonic distortion (THD) for voltage is reduced to 2.34%, closely matching the real-time measured value of 2.30%. Similarly, in the current spectrum, the proposed model achieves a significant reduction in third harmonic distortion and a THD of 11.40%, compared to 13.76% in real-time measurements. Consequently, a more precise characterization of the EAF behavior enables more effective mitigation of harmonics and vibrations, enhancing the stability and power quality of the electrical networks to which they are connected.

An Experimental Approach for Understanding V-I Characteristic of Electric Arc Furnace Load
(KAUNAS UNIV TECHNOLOGY, 2017) Seker, Mustafa; Memmedov, Arif
Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) are nonlinear loads causing power quality problems on the systems they are connected to. The main reason of EAFs causing power quality problems is the nonlinear characteristics of the electric arc. In this study, dynamic working characteristics of electric arc furnace load at Sivas Iron and Steel Incorporated Company (SIDEMIR) operating with 60 MVA EAF have been experimentally examined by HIOKI 3197 PQ analyser. Utilizing the measured dynamic load curves, mathematical equation and proper parameters have been determined for modelling electrical arc with the help of curve fitting methods on Matlab program. Also by modeling a phase equivalent of the system and harmonic filters existing on the system, a time domain model has been formed and with this model, harmonic effects of the EAF have been examined with Matlab/Simulink. Simulation results show that the presented model can be used for examining PQ and voltage harmonics problems caused by EAF loads.

FUZZY CONTROL AND SLIDING MODE FUZZY CONTROL OF DC MOTOR
(Yildiz Technical Univ, 2014) Yaras, Basri; Huseynov, Rafael; Namazov, Manafeddin; Celikkale, Ibrahim Emre; Seker, Mustafa
Direct current (DC) motors are often used in application that position and speed control require. During operation of DC motors, while parameters such as resistance and inductance varies with time, motors may be exposed to the uncertainties loads. For this reason, especially the control method applied in the high-accuracy systems must be best selected. In this study, a method which more durable based on fuzzy control has been developed synthesizing sliding mode control with fuzzy control methods. Parameter variations and uncertainties is carry out using Matlab/Simulink/Robust Control Toolbox. Resistance and inductance is given tolerance, load is offer uncertainly. By looking at the results of the simulation sliding mode fuzzy control method based on fuzzy control method has been concluded that is more stable against load variations and uncertainties, settling time is shorter than, and the system reaches a faster reference signal.

(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Seker, Mustafa; Memmedov, Arif; Huseyinov, Rafael
Electric Arc Furnaces(eaf) are nonliear loads which are occured the power quality problems in electrical grids. Because of theese reasons, teh operational characteristic of EAF must be understanding very well. In this paper, Operation characteristics of MVA EAF which is located in Sivas Iron and Steel Inc. (SIDEMIR) has been examined for different EAF transformator taps. In adition to, CA 8332 power analyzer meaurements obtained from the input power in EAF and static characteristics have been compared and current values and optimal operation condations for EAF loads can be determined. © 2016 The Chamber of Turkish Electrical Engineers.

Power Quality Measurement and Analysis in Electric Arc Furnace for Turkish Electricity Transmission System
(KAUNAS UNIV TECHNOLOGY, 2017) Seker, Mustafa; Memmedov, Arif; Huseyinov, Rafael; Kockanat, Serdar
During the recent years, with its increasing steel production, Turkey has succeeded to become one of the ten biggest steel producer countries in the world. In Turkey, there are 3 integrated plants and 27 Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plants in operation for iron-steel production. 71,3 % of the steel products was produced by EAF plants and also it is planned for new plants to produce with arc furnaces. In this study, power quality problems caused by 60MVA arc furnace at Sivas Iron and Steel Incorporated Company (SIDEMIR), have been examined by HIOKI 3197 and Chauvin Arnoux(CA) 8332B power quality analysers according to IEC 61000-4-30 standards. In addition, with equivalent circuit model designed by utilizing Electromagnetic Transient Program(EMTP) software, possible harmonic effects on the electricity grid have been evalauted and by determining power quality problems caused by EAF-60 furnace, solution offers were presented in order to improve power quality.

The modelling and simulation of static VAR compensator (SVC) system for electric arc furnace with Matlab/Simulink
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Seker, Mustafa; Memmedov, Arif; Huseyinov, Rafael
Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) are nonlinear and time-variying loads caused to many electrical power quality problems in electrical grids. Nonlinear secondary current and reactive power are the mainly effect of EAF loads for these power quality problems In this study, three phase electrical arc furnace system which is feeding the 60 MVA EAF located in Sivas Iron and Steel Inc.(SIDEMIR) has been modelled with Matlab/Simulink. Electrical arc are modelled as exponatianl-hyperbolik function and random flicker effect are used for the determination od the Flicker effect. In addition to Static VAR Compensator system has been modelled for the inversigation the reactive power copmpansation. Trigger control system has been created for the adjusting the CVS triger angle automaticaly. Performed studies suggest that it may be used in the analysis of power quality problems caused by the electric arc furnace load of this model. © 2016 The Chamber of Turkish Electrical Engineers.
