Conflict management styles of nurse managers working in inpatient institutions: the case of Turkey
(WILEY, 2018) Tuncay, Fatma Ozkan; Yasar, Ozgul; Sevimligul, Gulgun
Aim Background The present study aimed to determine conflict-resolution styles of nurse managers working in hospitals where organisational conflicts are common, and factors affecting their styles. When conflicts and/or administrative problems are encountered at different levels of nursing services, nurse managers' communication skills and approaches play a key role in problem solving. Methods Results This study was conducted in Sivas, a province in the eastern part of Turkey. The study sample involved 116 nurse managers working in inpatient institutions. Data were collected with the Sociodemographic Characteristics Questionnaire and the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory. Of the conflict-management styles, the one preferred by the participating nurse managers was collaborating, followed by compromising, avoiding, competing, and accommodating. However, age, educational background, length of service, and managerial experience were effective in determining the style of conflict resolution. Conclusion Implications for nursing management It was concluded that nurse managers preferred the collaborating style to manage conflicts because it is a positive and effective conflict-management style, and that a variety of variables played a role in their decision to adopt this style. Conflicts have an adverse effect on the productivity, morale, and patient care of all the health care team, which might lead to a rapid turnover of employees or dissatisfaction. Using conflict-resolution strategies in the workplace will help maintain a healthy work environment.

(ELSEVIER IRELAND LTD, 2011) Mollaoglu, Mukadder; Fertelli, Tulay Kars; Tuncay, Fatma Ozkan
The aim of the study was to evaluate disability in patients with elderly stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS) and epilepsy, and to analyze its relationship with demographic characteristics. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 113 patients with neurological diseases. The data were collected with a Personal Information Form, the Rivermead Mobility Index (RMI), and the Brief Disability Questionnaire (BDQ) were used. The data were evaluated using percentage, variance analysis, the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Pearson correlation analysis. The study results demonstrate that among three disorders, the severity of disability increased in patients with stroke, epilepsy and MS, respectively. It was also found that in patients with stroke, MS and epilepsy experiencing disability in mobility, 32.7% had experienced moderate physical-social disability, and 63.3% had experienced severe physical-social disability, and that there was a significantly high relationship between mobility disability and physical-social disability. The severity of disability was found to be higher for older age, low level education, self-employed and widows. Especially in stroke patients, disability is a common problem in patients with epilepsy and MS. Detecting the level of disability is very important for decreasing the limitation in elderly patients with neurological illness. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Relationship Between Life Satisfaction and Perceived Health and Sexuality in Individuals Diagnosed with a Physical Illness
(SPRINGER, 2016) Sabanciogullari, Selma; Tuncay, Fatma Ozkan; Avci, Dilek
Chronic illnesses have negative effects on individuals' perception of health and thus on their life satisfaction by restricting their physical, emotional, social, and sexual functions. In individuals with a chronic disease, it is important to determine life satisfaction that covers their entire life and relevant factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2014 and June 2014 in Bandirma. The study aims to investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and perception of health and sexuality in individuals diagnosed with a chronic physical illness. The sample of the study consisted of 220 patients who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected with the Personal Information Form, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Nottingham Health Profile and Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale. To evaluate the data, descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. The participants' perception of health was good, but life satisfaction levels were moderate. Of the participants, 89.5 % experienced sexual dysfunction. Their life satisfaction was affected by the perception of health, but not by sexuality. The level of sexual functioning significantly affected perceptions of health. Therefore, while providing care for individuals with a chronic disease, nurses should be attentive to life satisfaction and the factors affecting life satisfaction and should carefully assess them.

The Relationship Between Preparedness for Caregiving and Spiritual Well-Being in the Carers of Stroke Patients: A Case Study in Turkiye
    (Springer, 2024) Tuncay, Fatma Ozkan
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between preparedness for caregiving and spiritual well-being in the carers of stroke patients. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 130 primary carers of patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of stroke at the neurology clinic of a hospital. It was determined that the participants had moderate levels of preparedness for caregiving, they had high levels of spiritual well-being, and there was a positive significant relationship between these two variables. According to the regression analysis results, the spiritual well-being level of the participants was a predictor of their preparedness for caregiving (B: 0.144, p < 0.001). The results of this study demonstrated that the spiritual well-being of the carers of stroke patients is important in increasing preparedness for caregiving. In this context, to ensure that the carers of all stroke patients feel prepared for the caregiving process, it is recommended to evaluate their preparedness levels, support them in their preparation for their caregiving roles, and identify their spiritual needs.
