Breast self-examination, mammography and Pap test among Turkish women: Role of healthcare professionals in Sivas
(European Publishing, 2020) Yurtsal, Z. Burcu; Bekar, Mine; Guler, Handan; Cetin, Perihan; Cesur, Busra
INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study is to determine how often women perform breast self-examination (BSE) and undergo mammography and Pap test, and how healthcare professionals affect them to do so. METHODS This descriptive study was carried out with 1025 women, aged 20-82 years and living in the central district of Sivas, who presented to the Gynecology and Obstetrics Outpatient Clinics of Hospitals between January and December 2010, and who volunteered to participate in the study and gave their verbal agreement to the researchers. RESULTS Out of the participants, 46.9% lacked mammogram knowledge, 13.2% received advice from healthcare professionals, and 20.1% thought that they were healthy and thus did not need mammography. Out of the participants, 45.9% lacked knowledge about the Pap test, 11.8% received advice from healthcare professionals, and 18.9% thought that they were healthy and thus did not need a 'Pap test'. CONCLUSIONS While one-fourth of the participants stated that they performed BSE and underwent mammography at least once, more than half reported that they did not have a Pap test. In preventive healthcare services, periodic health examinations and screenings for the most common types of women cancers should be increased; midwives should give education and counseling, and the importance of practices aimed at raising social awareness should be emphasized.

Effect of stress management training on depression, stress and coping strategies in pregnant women: a randomised controlled trial
(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2018) Pinar, Sukran Ertekin; Aksoy, Ozlem Duran; Daglar, Gulseren; Yurtsal, Z. Burcu; Cesur, Busra
Introduction: Pregnancy is a period of important biological and psychosocial changes and a period that carries high risk of experiencing anxiety and stress. It is important to reduce the depression and stress that is experienced in this period or to reduce the severity of the stress and to increase the stress coping power of the pregnant women. The research was conducted to examine the effect of stress management training on pregnant women's depression, stress and methods for coping with stress. Methods: Randomised controlled study of 202 pregnant women (experimental group: 103; control group: 99). The experimental group received stress management training and standard care; the control group received standard care. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and ways of coping inventory (WCI).Results: Both groups showed a decrease in average BDI score during the study; the decrease was greater in the experimental group (p<0.05). In the two assessments carried out after training the experimental group had lower average PSS scores than the control group (p<0.05). At the second and third assessments the experimental group had higher scores than the control group on the self-confident approach and search for social support approach WCI subscales (ps<0.05).Discussion: The average BDI and PSS scores of pregnant women in the experimental group decreased after training in coping with stress. Their scores on the self-confident approach, optimistic approach and search for social support WCI subscales increased. Stress management training is an effective method of encouraging pregnant women to take a positive approach to coping with stress.

Sexual Aspects of Breastfeeding and Lactation
(Springer International Publishing, 2023) Yurtsal, Z. Burcu; Uslu, Dilek
In many cultures, the breasts are, in many ways, connected to sexuality and intimacy. Next to providing nutrition for the baby, they are erogenic zones, a relevant factor for female identity, causing insecurity or pride, a source of pain, and a source of pleasure. There are striking similarities between breastfeeding, birth, and orgasm, with oxytocin orchestrating these processes, which are also comparably influenced by the ability ‘to relax’ (sometimes called ‘to let down’). During parturition, breast stimulation can influence the process of birth. Once lactation has started, it can affect sexuality positively and negatively, partly resulting from hormonal changes. Finally, when the lactating woman becomes sexually aroused or has an orgasm, milk outflow can be a source of confusion for some couples and a source of pleasure for others. It is the best nutrition for the baby, a vital factor in the bond between mother and child, and it has long-term health benefits for both. On the other hand, breastfeeding can cause severe fatigue, lack of sex drive, dyspareunia, and the fear of disfigurement. This chapter will include the HCP’s role in information on the different advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding. This chapter is part of ‘Midwifery and Sexuality’, a Springer Nature open-access textbook for midwives and related healthcare professionals. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s). 2023.

The Relationship Between Emotional Literacy Levels and Communication Skills of Midwifery Students
(2018) Cesur, Büşra; Pınar, Şükran Ertekin; Yurtsal, Z. Burcu; Aksoy, Özlem Duran; Uçar, Tuba; Erkek, Zümrüt Yılar
Objective Emotional literacy is the ability of individuals to recognize, understand and respond to the feelings of their own and others’ in a healthyway. It is important that midwives are professionals who recognize and manage their feelings, cope effectively with their problems, andhave meaningful relationships with their environment so that they can be able to recognize and be sensitive to the emotional needsof the individual they provide care. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between emotional literacy levels andcommunication skills of midwifery students. ( Sakarya Med J 2016, 8(1):108-116 )Materials andMethodsThe universe of this descriptive study 744 students who have studied in the midwifery department of three universities which Sivas(%40.7), Malatya (%29.3) and Tokat (%30.9) created the population of this study. The sample of the study consisted of 646 studentswho accepted to participate in the study. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Emotional Literacy Scale (ELS)and the Communication Skills Evaluation Scale (CSES). Percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation, one-way variance analysis andPearson correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results The average age of the students was 20.4±1.65. At the end of the research, it was found that the average ELS score of the studentswas 122.8±25.98 (moderate) and total CSES score was 102.7±13.09 (high level). There was a significant positive correlation (r=0.532;p=0.000) between the total scores of the ELS and the CSES.Conclusion Emotional literacy levels of students are moderate, their communication skills are high, and their communication skills increase as emotionalliteracy levels increase. The creation of programs to improve the emotional literacy of midwife candidates is important to educate midwiveswho can recognize and manage their own and others' feelings, who can emphatize and have strong communicational skills in the future.
