Öğe Caryl Churchill’in Fen Adlı Oyununda Kadınların Uyguladığı Şiddet Türleri(Atatürk Üniversitesi, 2024) Baştan, AjdaBu çalışmada, güçlü feminist söylemi ve siyasi görüşleriyle tanınan İngiliz oyun yazarı Caryl Churchill’in Fen adlı oyunundaki kadınların uyguladığı şiddet türleri incelenmiştir. Over several decades, the poet has been a significant contributor to Turkish culture and literature, expressing national sensitivity and the authentic essence of the country. In his rhymed, six-stanza composition, he reflects on memories from the 1940s and 1950s, presenting a nuanced portrayal that captures both positive and negative aspects of his childhood in a realistic manner. All over Sivas Hasreti, Bâkiler sensitively articulates his yearning for his hometown in a nostalgic tone, simultaneously highlighting various factual features of Sivas in Türkiye. Through the lens of nostalgia, the poet intricately weaves together details encompassing demography, religion, architecture, cultural heritage, climate, geography, history, icons, transportation, and life standards of Sivas. In this way, Bâkiler adeptly constructs a vivid mental image of his childhood hometown, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the multifaceted layers of memories from that era. The poet’s skill enriches the emotional depth and historical context of Sivas Hasreti, thereby solidifying the work’s special and enduring place in Turkish literature. Within the context of this play, Pinter incorporates elements of his own autobiography, contributing depth and a heightened sense of personal significance to the narrative, thereby enhancing the authenticity and relatability of the characters’ emotional journeys. The play demonstrates the complexities of three distinct relationships of marriage, male friendship, and an extra-marital affair involving married individuals. American sociologist Corey Keyes introduced the concepts of flourishing and languishing in 2002, signifying two opposite states of well-being. Written many years before Keyes’ introduction of these concepts, Pinter’s play vividly illustrates the initial flourishing in each relationship, characterized by vitality and growth. However, as the play progresses, the relationships gradually shift into languishing, marked by a loss of interest. Beyond its temporal setting, Pinter’s Betrayal offers a meaningful exploration of the complexities inherent within human connections, capturing universal emotions and experiences that affect across different eras. Through its incisive portrayal, the play illuminates the delicate equilibrium between these contrasting emotional states, offering a heartfelt reflection on the fragility and resilience of the human spirit amidst the ever-shifting landscape of interpersonal relationships. Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality stands as a significant milestone in postmodernist literature, positing that any new text is inevitably influenced or enriched by prior writings. British author Driscoll employs explicit intertextuality throughout the work, incorporating references to renowned English writers such as George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, D.H. Lawrence, Mary Shelley, and Lewis Carroll in various chapters. As a result, the reader perceives a connection between these authors and the chapters, contributing to the overall reading experience. It becomes evident that Driscoll, as a contemporary postmodernist novelist, draws from the themes and characters of these established literary figures to enhance the intricacies of her plot. By providing clues and insights relevant to the contemporary context, the author cleverly weaves explicit intertextual references into the narrative, engaging readers in a process akin to solving a puzzle, and creating connections. Moreover, Driscoll assumes the role of an instructor, posing critical questions about the aforementioned acclaimed authors, their works, and their characters. This approach makes the reader feel like a student, encouraging them to establish intertextual connections in Her Perfect Family and to understand the plot more easily.Öğe Learned violence: Bandura's social learning theory in Edward Bond's The Children(Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi SBE Dergisi, 2023) Bastan, Ajda; Dülek, AhmetThis study focuses on Bandura's social learning theory by examining the theme of learned violence in Edward Bond's The Children. Albert Bandura, a significant Canadian-born American psychologist, studied behaviourist questions about individuals and developed what is now known as social learning theory. In response to the outdated belief that violent behaviour is the result of innate aggressive tendencies, he introduced the theory which is concerned with the interaction of the learner's mind and its surroundings. Bandura's theory posits that people learn new behaviour, attitudes, and emotional responses by observing, modelling, and imitating the actions of others in their social environment. Edward Bond, on the other hand, has been one of the most controversial and prolific writers in contemporary British theatre. His twelve-scene short play The Children, which premiered in 2000, is considered as one of his later works. By using young characters in his work, the playwright reflects on the effects of social environment on teenagers. The play is about Joe, a teenager who lives with his abusive mother. When compared to his mother, Joe becomes more violent over time because he burns down a building in which a child dies. Thus, Bond's play demonstrates how violence is learned in parallel with Bandura's theoryÖğe A rereading of Caryl Churchill's Owners: Patriarchy and misogyny(Wiley, 2023) Baştan, AjdaCaryl Churchill's first professional play, Owners, is about ownership as its title implies. One of the highlighted themes in the play is misogyny which has been overlooked by scholars and critics who have commented on Owners. Thus, my aim in this study is to consider and disclose the reasons for misogyny, demonstrated by Churchill as a socio-political critique, through a feminist reading. As the play is generally examined within the context of themes of power, politics or possession, this article may contribute to correct this omission in the academic domain. In her dark comedy, Churchill emphasises how gender roles are culturally learned and transferred to succeeding generations. In Owners, the married couple Marion and Clegg are both misogynists, but endowed with opposing world views. Churchill, like a sociologist, has made this family the main subject of her play and used it as a point of reference when explaining the reasons for misogyny in a comic and exaggerated style. In this family, while Marion is equipped with bourgeois feminist and anti-patriarchal ideas, Clegg is a man supporting patriarchal principles. Churchill reveals in her play that Marion and Clegg hate women who do not fit into their ideal world views.Öğe Preparation and evaluation of a propolis ointment for skin nourishing and healing.(Pakistan Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 01.11.2022) Şeker, İbrahim TuğkanPropolis is a resinous substance containing aromatic acids, esters, volatile compounds, hydrocarbons, steroids, enzymes, flavonoids, vitamins and minerals. As a conclusion prepared propolis ointment can be a good candidate for a cosmetic ointment for skin nutrition and healing purposes.Öğe Influence of using scarlet runner bean flour on the production and physicochemical, textural, and sensorial properties of vegan cakes: WASPAS-SWARA techniques(ELSEVIER, 12/02/2022) HASTAOĞLU EMRE; GÖKSEL SARAÇ MERYEM; Dedebaş, Tuğba; ARSLAN EBUZERThe present study aims to assess the use of scarlet runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.) our having high protein content in the production of vegan cake, determine the product properties, and analyze the preferences of consumers. For this purpose, 5 different vegan cakes were produced by adding various concentrations (0, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) of scarlet runner bean our into wheat our containing no animal product. Baking properties, physiochemical, biochemical, textural, and sensorial analyses were performed for vegan cakes. Moreover, in sensorial analyses, WASPAS-SWARA method that is one of the multi-criteria decision-making techniques was used and the most preferred cake sample was determined. In the formulation of vegan cakes, increasing concentration of scarlet runner bean our increased the levels of protein, total phenolic, and antioxidant matter in cakes and they were found to range between 4.29 and 8.70%, 14.19–43.92 (mg/mL gallic acid), and 7.645–34.39%, respectively. On the other hand, with the addition of bean our, the colors of cake samples got darker and redness values increased. Baking properties did not change but changes were observed in textural properties. Using WASPAS-SWARA analysis, the most preferred cake sample from the aspect of textural properties was found to be C100 that was made of scarlet runner bean our.Öğe Modeling of Listeria monocytogenes survival and quality attributes of sliced mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) subjected to pulsed UV light(Wiley-Blackwell, 2021) Nene Meltem KeklikPulsed ultraviolet (PUV) light technology holds the potential for surface decontamination of foods. In this study, the survival of L. monocytogenes and some quality attributes (color, moisture, water activity, and antioxidant activity) of sliced mushrooms subjected to PUV light were modeled using data obtained from a previous study. Three mathematical models, log-linear model, Weibull model, and log-logistic model were used to describe the inactivation of L. monocytogenes with respect to fluence (J/cm2) at three treatment distances (5, 8, and 13 cm) from the quartz window of the PUV-light system. Weibull model (R2 adj: 0.8598–0.9820, root mean square error [RMSE]: 0.09–0.24) described the inactivation better compared to log-linear model (R2 adj: 0.7205–0.9072, RMSE: 0.22) and log-logistic model (R2 adj: 0.4871–0.7629, RMSE: 0.24–0.46). The survival curves of L. monocytogenes at all treatment distances showed upward concavity. These findings indicate that the survival of L. monocytogenes on sliced mushrooms subjected to PUV light follows a non-linear trend, and the Weibull model may be a useful tool to predict the behavior of L. monocytogenes on mushroom surface subjected to PUV light. For the quality attributes, zero-order kinetics (R2: 0.8500–0.9974, mean square error (MSE): 1.55*10−8– 2.3124) described the changes slightly better compared to first-order kinetics (R2: 0.8451–0.9974, MSE: 1.55*10−8–2.3867).
