The Relationship Between Midwifeship Students' Compassion Fatigue and Empathic Tendencies

It is thought to be very important for midwifery students to understand the concepts of empathy and compassion and to serve by adopting them. It is recommended that every pregnant woman give birth with a midwife. It is thought that midwives' use of their empathy and compassion skills as much as possible during the prenatal, birth and postnatal care and treatment processes that support birth increases the woman's acceptance of the care and the quality of the care provided. It is thought that it would be beneficial for midwifery students to include the concepts of empathy and compassion as subjects in the curriculum at school. The study will be conducted descriptively in the midwifery department of Sivas Cumhuriyet University, Faculty of Health Sciences. The universe of the study; a total of 413 students are studying in the 2022-2023 academic year and agreed to participate in the study. Research data were collected face to face using the "Personal Information Form", "Compassion Fatigue Scale" and "Empathic Tendency Scale". While the midwifery profession serves the health of the family in particular and society in general, having high levels of empathy and compassion is very important for the quality of the service provided and the continuity of the service. In this respect, our research project will guide midwives and midwifery students on the concepts of empathy and compassion. In addition, it will also reveal the importance of the subject for students studying in other health departments. On the other hand, including the concepts of empathy and compassion in the curriculum as subjects will increase the quality of education and training and the quality of care in the field.

ÖZ Ebelik öğrencilerinin empati ve merhamet kavramlarını anlaması ve benimseyerek hizmet etmesinin oldukça önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir. Her gebenin bir ebe ile doğum yapması önerilmektedir. Ebelerin doğumu destekleyen, doğum öncesi, doğum ve doğum sonrası bakım ve tedavi süreçlerinde empati ve merhamet yeteneklerini olabildiğince fazla kullanmaları kadının bakımı kabullenmesini ve verilen bakımın kalitesini arttırdığı düşünülmektedir. Ebelik öğrencilerinin okuldaki derslerde empati ve merhamet kavramlarının müfredatta konu olarak yer almasının faydalı olacağı düşünülmektedir. Çalışma, Sivas Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi ebelik bölümünde tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın evreni; 2022-2023 eğitim ve öğretim yılında öğrenim gören ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden toplam 413 öğrencidir. Araştırma verileri, ‘‘Kişisel Bilgi Formu’’, ‘‘Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği’’ ve ‘‘Empatik Eğilim Ölçeği’’ kullanılarak yüz yüze toplanmıştır. Ebelik mesleğinin özelde aile genelde toplum sağlığına hizmet ederken, empati ve merhamet seviyelerinin üst düzeyde olması verilen hizmetinin kalitesi ve hizmetin devamlılığı açısından oldukça önemlidir. Bu açıdan yapmış olduğumuz araştırma, ebe ve ebelik öğrencilerinin empati ve merhamet kavramları üzerinde rehberlik edecektir. Bununla birlikte diğer sağlık bölümlerinde öğrenim gören öğrenciler için de konunun önemini ortaya koyacaktır. Diğer taraftan müfredata empati ve merhamet kavramlarının derslerde konu olarak yer alması eğitim ve öğretimin kallitesini, sahada ise bakımın kalitesini artıracaktır.
