CONFRONTING SOCIAL TRAUMA: PRISONS AS POLITICAL SPACE IN LITERATURE AND CINEMA

In literature and cinema, it is possible to see every issue that belongs to humans and almost every place that forms the basis for this issue. One of these places is prisons. Prisons are frequently encountered in Turkish literature and cinema. Especially in period novels and films, prisons and the characters in them become mirrors held up to the period. These works provide the healing of social traumas through expression. In this study, works that have intertextual/interfilm connections among the novels and films of this genre that deal with similar subjects were selected and examined in order to show the role of art in the healing of social traumas and in the context of historical reality. The following results were reached as a result of the study: In the novels and films subject to the study, it is possible to see the interrogation and prison days of the heroes and the traumatic effects of those days on them even years later. The prisons where these events took place were depicted as dirty, old, and dark places; it can be said that prisons turned into a serious area of identity struggle between administrators and prisoners. In addition, it was seen that it was not possible to remain neutral while narrating the events witnessed in the works, and sometimes even experienced; the themes of the works were given through prisons that contained social traumas.

Edebiyat ve sinemada insana ait olan her meseleyi ve bu meseleye zemin oluşturan hemen her mekânı görmek mümkündür. Bu mekânlardan biri hapishanelerdir. Türk edebiyatında ve sinemasında hapishaneler sıkça karşımıza çıkar. Bilhassa dönem romanları ve filmlerinde hapishaneler ve içindeki tipler döneme tutulan ayna olur. Bu eserler toplumsal travmaların dışavurumla sağaltılmasını sağlar. Bu çalışmada benzer konuları ele alan bu türdeki roman ve filmler arasından metinlerarası/filmlerarası bağları da olan eserler seçilerek toplumsal travmaların sağaltılmasında ve tarihsel gerçeklik bağlamında sanatın rolünü göstermek amacıyla incelenmiştir. Çalışma neticesinde şu sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır: İncelemeye konu olan roman ve filmlerde kahramanların sorgu ve hapishane günlerini, o günlerin yıllar sonrasında bile üzerlerinde kalan travmatik etkilerini görmek mümkündür. Bu olayların yaşandığı hapishaneler kirli, eski ve karanlık yerler olarak tasvir edilmiştir; hapishanelerin yöneticilerle mahkûmlar arasında ciddi bir kimlik mücadelesi alanına dönüştüğü söylenebilir. Ayrıca eserlerde tanıklık edilen, hatta bazen bizatihi yaşanan olaylar anlatılırken tarafsız kalınamadığı; eserlerin temalarının toplumsal travmaları barındıran hapishaneler üzerinden verildiği görülmüştür.
