Differences in corneal diameters (megalocornea or microcornea) have been noted as a finding in some important congenital diseases and syndromes in the premature newborn. It is essential to know the normal corneal diameters of healthy premature infants for determination of these findings. In this study, the horizontal corneal diameters of 102 healthy premature infants varying in gestational age (30-37 weeks) and birth weight (1000-3000 g) were measured. Reference values of the corneal diameters of premature infants were determined per gestational age and birth weight. The horizontal corneal diameter ranged from 7.25 mm to 8.75 mm (mean 7.76 ± 0.45 mm). The smallest diameter (7.25 mm) was found in an infant with a gestational age of 30 weeks and a birth weight of 1000 g. The largest diameter (8.75 mm) belonged to twin prematures with a gestational age of 37 weeks and birth weights of 2450 g and 2700 g. A positive correlation between gestational age, birth weight and horizontal corneal diameters was determined. We concluded that the horizontal corneal diameter depends on gestational age rather than birth weight.en_US
