| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Cryptosporidium parvum is a parasite which is a common cause of diarrhea world-wide. The infection can be transmitted from animals to humans, from person to person through contaminated water and foods. Although Cryptosporidium in immunocompetent person results in a self-limited diarrheal illness or asymptomatic infection, in immunocompromised patients may results acute or chronic diarrhea or fatal course Diarrhea due to different causes of diarrhea is common in diabetic patients. In this study, Cryptosporidial oocyts were detected by examination of fecal samples staining by modified acit-fast method in 70 diabetic patients (mean age: 54.52±1.17years, 49 of them with diarrhea, 21 of them without diarrhea). Mean age of diabetes mellitus of patients were 6.31±0.60 years, 10% of them on diet alone, 81.4% on oral antidiabetic agents, 8.6% on insulin. Cryptosporidial oocysts were detected in 9 of all diabetic patients (12.9.%). The prevalence of Cryptosporidium was 28.6% in the patients with diarrhea and 6.1 % in the patients without diarrhea. It was found a significant correlation between age of diabetes mellitus and prevalence of Cryptosporidium (p<0.001). As a result, we think that Cryptosporidium spp. should be detected in the diabetic patients with diarrhea. | en_US |
