Failure to reveal differences between perception and sensation results in artificial distinctions or inaccuracies that knowledge theories encounter at a conceptual level. When it is not overlooked that perception is a process of mental functioning and sensation is a physiological process operating through sensory organs, conceptual confusion can be avoided. Such a distinction provides an understanding of the illusions that one encounters in the perception of the external world, as well as explaining how sensory data is interpreted by reason. David Hume stated that all mental content of human beings is based on perception. He considers that no a priori element from the human mind is involved in this mental content. In order to prove this, it was necessary to show that the source of abstract concepts such as God, freedom, space and time, which we know to be in the content of human thought and which we cannot factually perceive in any way, is perception. Hume thought he had done these things, but the natural science of his time did not allow him for further evaluation. Though Hume did not initially use sceptical arguments in order to reach the conclusion but the last point Hume came is scepticism. He analyses all mental content on the strength of perception – based method, rather than acting on the premise that perceptions cannot be trusted and that they are deceptive. His theory of the external world is directed to the fact that nothing else can be known except the content of perception. Everything is a bunch of perceptions, even man himself. Even about the existence of objects in the external world, only can belief be expressed. It cannot be proved that objects have a continuous existence and that they have a presence independent of perception. Hume’s thoughts and the problems he discovered inspired many philosophers after him.tr
