M: We aimed to scrutinize the seroprevalence of HBsAg, anti-HBs and anti-HCV in the selected patients admitted to the Emergency Service of the Faculty of Medicine of Cumhuriyet University, Sivas. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 1174 patients (447 females, 727 males), in whom hepatitis markers were assayed for various reasons, were examined. They were classified according to age and sex. In the statistical analysis of the groups, a chi-square test was used. RESULTS: When the groups are compared, HBsAg was 4% in females and %8.4 in males. The difference between the sexes was statistically significant (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in terms of anti-HCV and anti-HBs values (p>0.05). In the examination of the age groups, the percentages HBsAg and anti-HBs positivity were found to be 0.8% and 16.1% in the group of 20 years and below. When these percentages were compared with the other age groups, they were significantly low (p<0.05). The anti-HCV percentage was 6.9% in the group of 40 years and above, which was significantly higher than the other age groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: As a result, it is necessary that hepatitis markers should be assayed in some groups of patients due to its infectivity. These data help us to know the prevalence of viral hepatitis in the population involved and play a crucial role in protecting the hospital staff. Also, assaying hepatitis markers' in the selected patients admitting to the emergency services will not cause an unnecessary burden on hospital and social resources.en_US
