| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Although the applications of criminological theories on criminal behavior or substance use issues among the scholars in the developed countries, especially in the United States, have been a widespread practice, this is not the case in Turkey. The study tests the General Strain Theory (GST) on substance use among undergraduate students at a state university (n= 974). This paper explores three core questions of premises of GST: (1) does strain (or stress) have a positive effect on substance use (smoking and ci garette use); (2) is the effect of strain on substance use ‘mediated’ by anger; (3) is the effect of strain on substance use ‘moderated’ by criminal and noncriminalforces (e.g., “coping” factors)? The findings did not lend support for General Strain Theory. | en_US |
