SÜHEYL B. AMR (r.a.)’IN HAYATI VE FAALİYETLERİ

Abstract

Süheyl b. Amr Mekke fethinden sonra Müslüman olan sahabe- lerden biridir. Müslüman olmadan önce Mekke’nin eşrafından sayılan Süheyl, hitabet gücü ve zenginliği ile tanınmaktaydı. İs- lam’ın tebliğ edilmeye başlamasından sonra Mekke müşrikleri- nin yanında yer aldı, Hudeybiye Antlaşmasında onların temsil- cisi oldu. Bedir esirleri arasında iken cezaya çarptırılmasına Hz. Peygamber izin vermedi. Hz. Peygamber’in vefatından sonraki dönemde Müslümanları İslam dairesinde tutmak için ünlü hi- tabet gücünü kullandı. İslam’a geç girmesinin kendisi için bü- yük bir kayıp olduğunu bilerek eski itibarını aramak yerine, kayıplarını telafi etmek için Allah yolunda cihat etmek gerekti- ğini idrak etti. Suriye cephesinde İslâm’ın yayılması için müca- dele eden Süheyl b. Amr, bölgede h. 18. yılda yaşanan taun fe- laketinde vefat etti.

Suhayl b. Amr is one of the companions who became Muslim after the conquest of Mecca. Before accepting Islam, Suheyl was one of the notables of Mecca and was known by his oratorical power and wealth. When the Islamic message was transmitted to him, he sided with the Mecca’s polytheists and became a rep- resentative of them in the Hudaybiyah Treaty. While he was one of the captives of War of Badr, Prophet Muhammed did not allow his punishment. After Prophet's death, he used his well- known oratory power to keep the Muslims in harmony. Reali- zing late joining to Islam, he did not seek after his old reputa- tion, instead of that to compensate for losses he considered to necessity of struggle in the path of Allah. While Suheyl b. Amr was struggling to spread Islam in the Syrian front, he died as a result of the plague in A.H.18.
