The Science process skills scale development for elementary school students

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilköğretim 6, 7 ve 8. sınıf öğrencilerine yönelik bilimsel süreç becerileri ölçeğinin geliştirilmesidir. Ölçek geliştirme sürecinde ilk olarak temel ve üst düzey becerilere yönelik sorular (34 madde) hazırlanmış ve uzman görüşüne sunulmuştur. Uzman görüşlerinden sonra kalan 28 maddelik ölçek, Sivas il merkezinde kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiş beş ilköğretim okulunda öğrenim gören 6, 7 ve 8. sınıf (n=345) öğrencilerine uygulanmıştır. İstatistiksel analiz için Finesse Paket Programı kullanılarak madde analizi yapılmış ve her sorunun madde güçlüğü ile ayırt edicilik indeksleri hesaplanmıştır. 28 maddeden oluşan bilimsel süreç becerileri ölçeğinin güvenirlik katsayılı (KR–20) 0.83, ölçeğin ortalama güçlüğü ise 0.54 olarak belirlenmiştir. Bir sorunun ayırıcılık indeksinin 0.20’nin altında olduğu görülmüş ve bu yüzden soru ölçekten çıkarılmıştır. Kalan 27 maddelik ölçeğin güvenirliği (KR–20) 0.84 bulunmuştur. Alt ve üst % 27’lik grupların puanları arasındaki ayırt edicilikler incelendiğinde, ölçeğin bütün sorularının istatistiksel olarak anlamlı biçimde (p<.05) ayırt edici olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ölçeğin ilköğretim ikinci kademedeki öğrencilerin bilimsel süreç becerilerini ölçmede uygun olduğu düşünülmektedir.

The current study aims to develop the &amp;#8220;Science Process Skills Scale&amp;#8221; for the 6th, 7th and 8th grade elementary school students. First, items about basic and high level skills (34 items) were developed. Then, the item number was reduced to 28 after expert review. The revised scale was administered to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade elementary school students (n=345) attending 5 different elementary schools in Sivas, Turkey. Convenience sampling was done to select participants. Item analysis was done via the Finesse Package Program. Moreover, item difficulty and distinctiveness indexes of each item were calculated. As a result, the reliability coefficient was found to be (KR&amp;#8211;20) 0.83, and the item difficulty was found to be 0.54 for the 28-item science process skills scale. One of the items was found to have a distinctiveness index below 0.20; therefore, it was excluded from the scale. The reliability for the scale with the remaining 27 items was found to be (KR&amp;#8211;20) 0.84. All the items in the scale were found to be significantly (p&lt;0.05) distinctive when distinctiveness between the scores of upper and lower 27% groups was examined. The scale is considered to be appropriate to measure the science process skills of elementary school students.
