EPİKTETOS’UN STOİK ONTOLOJİDE İRADE VE ÖZGÜRLÜĞE YER AÇMA ÇABASI

Abstract

Stoa, Hellenistik dönemin önemli bir felsefe okuludur. Her ne kadar Stoa'nın düşünceleri eklektik bir yapı arz etse de ontolojik bağlamda determinizm, kader, doğa, doğaya uygunluk gibi tartışmalarda ortaya koyduğu düşünceler, sonraki dönemlere etkisi açısından önemlidir. Stoa'nın önemli bir temsilcisi olan Epiktetos'un bahse konu olan bu tartışmalar bağlamında görüşlerinin de ayrı bir değeri vardır. Genel kabul, Stao'nın ontolojisi Herakleitos'a, ahlak felsefesi konusundaki düşünceleri de Sokrates'e dayanmaktadır; fakat her iki konuda da Stoacılar'ın bu iki geleneği bire bir taklit etmedikleri çok açıktır. Geç dönem Stoası'nın bir temsilcisi olan Epiktetos'un irade konusunu vurgulu bir şekilde ele alması ve felsefesini neredeyse tamamıyla irade ve özgürlük üzerine kurmuş olması onun düşüncelerini hem kendi döneminde hem sonraki dönemler için önemli kılmıştır. Söylemlerinin öne çıkarılmasında bir dönem köle olarak yaşamasının etkisinin olduğunu söylemek de mümkündür. Varlık alanını iradenin alanı ve irade dışı alan olarak ikiye ayıran Epiktetos, maddi dünyaya ait olan insanın bedenini, evlatlarını ve çevresinde bulunanların tamamını iradenin dışında bir alana; insanın fikirlerini, düşüncelerini, kararlarını ve tercihlerinden ibaret olan iç/zihin dünyasının tamamını ise, iradenin alanına ait görmektedir. Ayrıca iyiliği ve kötülüğü de bütünüyle iradenin alanında görmesi Epiktetos'un en temel savunularındandır

Stoa is an important philosophical school of the Hellenistic period. Although thoughts of Stoa were formed in an eclectic manner, its opinions in the ontological context about determinism, fate, nature, conformity with nature have effect on the ideas of later periods. Ideas of Epictetus, an important representative of the Stoa have a special value in the debates of these subjects. It is admitted in general that ontology of Stoa depends on Herakleitos, thoughts on moral philosophy are based on Socrates. But it is clear that in these two subjects Stoic philosophers do not imitate them in the same way. As one of the representatives of the later period of Stoa, Epictetus’ emphasis on the subject of will and founding his philosophy almost entirely on the will and the freedom have made his opinions significant not only in his period but also in the later periods. It is possible that why his opinions were highlighted because of he lived as a slave once upon a time. Epictetus divides the area of the existence in two dimensions, that is area of will and area of non- will. According to him, the things which are related to material world such as body of the human being, his children and the things which are around him belongs to the area of non- will; the things which are related to inner world such as ideas, thoughts, decisions and choices of person belongs to the area of will. At the same time considering the good and the evil in the area of the will is one of the most basic defenses of Epictetus
