Juvenile xanthogranuloma mimicking severe asthma in an 8-year-old boy

Abstract

We report a case of juvenile xanthogranuloma of the trachea in an 8-year-old boy who had severe respiratory distress. The patient had been treated for childhood asthma, however chest computed tomographic scan and bronchoscopy showed a quite large polypoid mass in the upper trachea. The patient underwent endoscopic removal. Pathologic diagnosis revealed juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) with clear surgical margins. The patient is well at 8th postoperative month. Although JXG is a benign disease, surgery should be applied whenever dysfunction occurs in effected organ. © 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
