In this study, it is aimed to classify the overburden removal equipment which are reported to have different digging force capacities. The machines included are tracked and wheeled front-end-loaders, tracked hydraulic front shovels, tracked and wheeled hydraulic excavators, rope shovels and electrically-driven draglines. Following the analysis of mechanism with which the digging power is transferred, digging force and bucket cutting width values were initially used to calculate the unit digging force and then rank overburden removal equipment according to their bucket capacity. In addition, regression analyses were performed for each type of machine by using bucket capacity and unit digging force. Then, the equations were derived to calculate the unit digging force of a specific machine type with a given bucket capacity. The results obtained from this study are in accordance with those reported in literature.en_US
