Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of the short and long term inhaler corticosteroid (ICS) use on oral and periodontal health in asthmatic patients. Methods: Control group was consisted of 17 subjects who had no systemic problems, while the study group consisted of 51 patients with asthma using ICS. Study groups were divided into three subgroups in respect of the duration of ICS use. The clinical parameters such as Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Clinical attachment levels (CAL), Probing depth (PD), DMFT and salivary pH were recorded. Intraoral examination of patients was done for any mucosal pathology. Results: PI, GI, CAL, PD and salivary pH values of all subgroups of the study group were found higher than those of in control group (P<0.05). DMF-T index means of II. and III. subgroups of study group were found higher than control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our study showed that the use of ICS in treatment of asthma lead to an increase in PI and GI scores and periodontal tissue destruction, caries and tooth loss were increased in case of long term use of ICS. © 2011 Düzce Medical Journal.
