dc.description.abstract | Introduction: In this experimental study, the effect of nitrofurazon which is a clinically frequently used topical antibacterial agent, on partial thickness wound healing was investigated. Materials and Methods: In this experiment, a total of 40 rats were divided into 5 groups, each of which contained 8 rats. After a partial thickness skin wound in 4x4 cm2 size was created by using hydrosurgery device on the back of the rats, daily dressing was made by using topical application of nitrofurazon in group 1, rifampicin in group 2, nitrofurazon-rifampicin combination in group 3, bacitracin-neomycin combination in group 4 (1st control group) and saline solution in group 5 (2nd control group). Surface areas of wounds were measured on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th days. Also, duration of wound healing was determined in terms of days. Results: The mean wound healing time was found to be 12,75 ± 0,88 days in group 1, 11,75 ± 1,03 days in group 2, 11,37 ± 1,18 days in group 3, 11,62 ± 0,91 days in group 4 and 12,12 ± 0,83 days in group 5. There was no statistical difference between healing times. When compared the wound surface areas of groups, statistically significant difference were found in all measurement days. Conclusion: Nitrofurazon didn't cause any delay in the healing of partial thickness rat wounds, but it left the wound surface area larger than the other agents during the healing period. This effect disappeared in combination with rifampicin. As a result, sole nitrofurazon can be used carefully in daily clinical practice, and can be used safer and more effective in combination with rifampicin. | en_US |
