Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient that is incorporated into the structure of biologically active selenoproteins as the amino acid selenocysteine. It is a part of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme system, which protects the cell from oxidative damage by peroxidases accumulated in the cell. It is necessary for the body's antioxidant defense mechanisms to function properly. It is a very important element in the continuity of many vital functions, especially oxidant/antioxidant balance and thyroid hormone metabolism. It is found in the structure of enzymes that are involved in the body's homeostasis, growth and many organ and tissue functions, especially the immune system. Selenium, a trace element, cannot be produced by the body and must be taken from outside. Although it varies depending on age and gender, the daily Se requirement of adults is 55 micrograms. It can be naturally obtained from drinking water, soil and some nutrients. On the other hand, both deficiency and excess of minerals can cause some problems in the body. However, it is possible to meet the need with a balanced and healthy diet. In this article, selenium mineral, its properties, its effects on the body are discussed in detail and current literature information is included.tr
