El Yıkama ve Paraziter Hastalıklar Eğitimi: Okul Çocuklarının Bilgi ve Davranışları Üzerine Etkisi
Abstract
Hand washing is the simplest and most effective method in the prevention of parasitic diseases. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of hand washing and parasitic diseases education on the knowledge and behavior of school children. Pretest-posttest without control group intervention research was performed between the dates of December 2015-February 2016. 230 students (obtained by sample studying) studying in a state secondary school in the province of Sivas participated in the study. Data were collected by using a Personal Information Form, Handwashing Assessment Form, and Information Form Related to Parasitic Diseases. In the analysis of the data, number, percentage and Pearson Chi-square tests were used. The level of statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. The average age of students was 11.4±0.84. 99.1% of students said they got information on hand hygiene and 47% of them said they got information on parasitic diseases. No statistically significant difference was found between frequency of hand washing, hand washing time, bidet type and gender before education (p>0.05). However, frequency of hand washing, hand washing time and the rate of using water and toilet paper in order to cleanse themselves were found to be higher in students who live in the city center compared to students living in villages linked to the center after education (p<0.05). Hand washing and parasitic diseases education was determined to make a positive impact on the knowledge and attitudes of students. Health professionals, especially midwives and nurses should contribute to the extension of hygienic hand washing practices to prevent the spread of parasitic diseases and to raise conscious and healthy communities.
